Third Wheel Ceramics is a Calgary-based, small batch ceramics company established in 2018 made up of two sisters, Khiha and Sable MacFarlane. They create handmade, functional wares from Canadian-sourced clay, crafting every piece themselves by hand from start to finish in their shared artist studio space in Southeast Calgary. They are known for having a large assortment of unique styles and shapes of work along with many one-of-a-kind items. By not constraining themselves with preset artistic boundaries, the sisters both benefit by being able to express their individuality in each piece they make. They put a focus on environmentally friendly practices including limiting their water supply while working, sourcing supplies locally, using eco friendly packaging and recycling their own clay; a process that is physical, labour intensive and time consuming. Their work has been sold in over a dozen retail shops across Canada including Calgary, AB, Tofino, BC, Canmore, AB and Lunenburg, NS. A few items are currently on display at the Fairmont Palliser Hotel in Calgary. Khiha and Sable both appreciate, and are enthusiastic about working with other local artists and have collaborated with several to date.
